Elegant slumming rehoboth beach3/17/2024 ![]() ![]() This summer, we rented a spacious yet cozy private house called Sea Rest one block from the beach on peaceful Hickman Street. Rehoboth’s strict preservation laws help maintain the town’s unsullied appeal, which is why you won’t see a McDonald’s pop up on the boardwalk anytime soon.įounded as Methodist camp in the late-1800s, today Rehoboth attracts DC professionals escaping the Hill, a sizeable gay contingent and families from Delaware and Maryland. It is, as always, a town of beach cottages and Victorian houses, quaint shops and seafood by candlelight. The sights there are always reassuringly familiar to me - the same enormous Dolles Salt Water Taffy sign, a Delaware landmark, anchors the boardwalk to the beachfront on Rehoboth Avenue. That’s why most summers, my husband and I (and now our young son and daughter), escape the chaos and racket of our Queens neighborhood and make the trek there for a little uncomplicated R&R.ĭowntown Rehoboth Beach is regarded as the peaceful, cultural and somewhat “untouched” cousin of the rowdier, much-larger Ocean City, Maryland, 20 miles down Route One/Coastal Highway. ![]() IN an age when many beach destinations are morphing into overcrowded and over-commercialized honky-tonk towns, traveling to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware - a place that’s remained essentially unchanged since my childhood - is like visiting an old friend. ![]()
